At the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, we believe every student deserves full access to language, learning, and opportunities to thrive.

MSAD follows an ASL/English bilingual philosophy. Our licensed Deaf/Hard of Hearing teachers use American Sign Language and English to provide accessible, engaging instruction that supports the development of the whole child. ASL provides students with clear and consistent access to communication, classroom instruction, and academic content through a visual language.

A strong foundation in ASL supports students as they develop their English literacy skills, including reading and writing, while strengthening communication, critical thinking, and academic achievement. Our bilingual approach also recognizes and celebrates Deaf culture while honoring the diverse cultural, linguistic, and individual identities each student brings to our community.

We believe learning extends beyond academics. Students are supported in developing the knowledge, confidence, independence, and skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Families as Partners

Families are essential partners in a child’s education. As a child’s first and most influential teachers, families play an especially important role in supporting the language and educational development of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind children.

MSAD works collaboratively with families throughout their child’s educational journey. We encourage family involvement, open communication, and shared decision-making to support each student’s individual growth and success.
